The
name "Sweetheart Gallery" was born of a romantic notion.
In 1973, Lila and Norman Bacon met in Woodstock, NY. It wasn't long
before Lila brought her painting talent to bear in collaboration with
Norman's art pottery production that "Sweetheart Pottery"
became their official business name. "What could be better than
loving what you do for a living, and doing it with the one you love?"
Successfully collaborating on the production of whimsical pottery
& sculpture from 1974 into the mid 1980's, they wanted to expand
the venue of the business. Venturing into a retail gallery was the
result of a vision back in 1981. With a strong desire to sell their
art directly to Woodstock clientele, Lila and Norman opened the
Sweetheart Gallery. "Our first store was small, but we were thrilled
to get a location as rentals and real estate in the small hamlet were
difficult to come by." As the business grew, more work was added
by other artisans until it could no longer expand in that location.
In 1993 they had an opportunity to buy a neglected property (with
a dramatic waterfall next to it!!!) in the heart of Woodstock, and
shortly thereafter completed a major renovation turning it into the
beautiful space it is today.
