Basket 19 Hand-woven Honeysuckle Vine by Anne Scarpa McCauley

Anne Scarpa McCauley created this basket with honeysuckle vines. She collects the vines from the land that surrounds her home. When the vines are skinned, the light green colors will become gold. In time, they will deepen in color from the sunlight. The brown of her baskets is Un-skinned honeysuckle, which will not change color.

Due to the nature of handcrafted work, subtle variations are natural.

Anne started her basket journey as a young child. Her job was to bring her goat herd to the fields and woods near her home, where they would munch on honeysuckle leaves. She would take the vines and weave them into baskets. She has been making these for over forty-five years and has the accomplished knowledge to create the baskets of her dreams.

Wild honeysuckle is the only vine used in her coiled basketry. Anne uses a center wire on her larger size handle baskets and on a few other pieces, covered over with honeysuckle. This gives added support to an area she thinks needs it.

Anne picks honeysuckle locally on the foothills of the Virginia property where she grew up. The honeysuckle she uses is kept natural. She does not use coloring or any finish on the honeysuckle or the completed baskets.

The skinned honeysuckle starts out light green in color and will turn a beautiful gold which deepens the more it's in the sunlight. The brown color you see in her baskets is Un-skinned honeysuckle. This brown color will not change.

Two of Anne’s basketry are in The Smithsonian American Art Museum Permanent Basket Collection: Cole-Ware Collection of American Basketry.
